This time every year since 2014, Jon Huber of Crowned Heads teams up with My Father cigars to release a limited-edition cigar that seems very festive for the fall season. With Calavera being Spanish for “Skull”, the Las Calaveras logo is in theme with the “Day of the Dead”.
This Mexican holiday is celebrated from the 31st of October to the 2nd of November and signifies the remembrance of friends and family members who have passed within the year. Last year’s Las Calaveras was purple and gold to pay homage to the late, great Kobe Bryant.
This year, Crowned Heads and My Father Factory haven’t released who this cigar is specifically dedicated to. However, that doesn’t stop us from being enamored with the bright yellow and red colors that feature on the box and band.
I’ve smoked two of the Las Calaveras 2019, and about six or seven of the Las Calaveras 2020. With some of the elements being the same as years past I know the type of complexity and unique tobaccos that are being crafted in this gem, so let’s dive in.

Cold Draw
After cutting the Las Calaveras LC50 with a straight cut, I was able to detect some prominent flavor notes immediately on the cold draw.
Two flavor notes I spotted right off the bat were sweet spice like cinnamon, as well as a hint of leather. As I took a few more puffs on the cold draw, those two flavors remained distinguished.
First Third
15 minutes into the LC50, the cinnamon taste has disappeared, while lasting leather flavor notes remained. On top of the leather, I was able to taste earth and a dash of cocoa.
Recently, I’ve noticed that I get a lot of cocoa flavor notes from cigars that are wrapped in Ecuadorian tobacco. Discovering certain tobaccos that I can’t get enough of is something I’ve found extreme joy in.
Second & Final Third
Not much changed in the last two-thirds. Along with the leather, earth, and cocoa, the cinnamon spice came back in full force. I thought that one of these notes would disappear over time, but they stood their ground! I was extremely happy that these four flavor notes remained super-strong throughout the last two-thirds, making this cigar one of the favorite cigars I’ve smoked all year.
Strength of Las Calaveras 2021
Like other Las Calaveras cigar lines to be released, 2021 remains in the middle of a medium-bodied and full-bodied cigar. The ebb and flow of the tobacco throughout the Las Calaveras cigar 2021 gives a great balance for those cigar smokers who love a cigar that isn’t super strong but gives a good balance.
Pairing Options
I went with my go-to pairing for most of my smokes. I brewed a hot cup of coffee, with two cream and two sugars packs. The best part of this pairing is that both the cigar and coffee play off one another very well.
Coffee compliments most cigars from Crowned Heads extremely well. Nicaraguan tobaccos and coffee should always go hand in hand with one another.
Final Thoughts
This limited-edition cigar is a line I look forward to smoking every year. I personally felt like 2021 had a lot to live up to from last year's Crowned Heads Las Calaveras 2021 edition. This was a surprisingly tasty smoke. It wasn’t as spicy as a lot of Crowned Heads cigars tend to be and the flavor profile was on I absolutely can’t get enough of.
